Associated with the nobility and the wealthy gentry, The Grand Tour was a rite of passage for a young man who had completed university, and eventually for a young woman who became of a certain age too. It consisted of an extended educational trip that included visiting countries with cultural prominence. Considered essential to the aristocratic education, the typical Grand Tour would include visiting museums, cultural and historical sites, studying art and the classics as well as refining language skills. This micro mosaic panel was likely picked up in Rome on an excursion and later brought back to England to be mounted as a pendant. Skilled and precise artisans created micro mosaics by arranging tiny pieces of glass to display scenes of ancient Rome and depictions of nature, such as birds or flowers.
